Encounter of the Spooky Kind (1980)
I love me some weirdo Hong Kong cinema. One of my favorite sub-genre’s is the hopping vampire sorcerer battle flick and Encounter of the Spooky Kind fits the bill.
Written, directed, and starring Hong Kong legend Sammo Hung, Encounter of the Spooky Kind aka Spooky Encounter is about a brave man who’s wife is cheating on him with his boss, who happens to be a very important man. When the boss finds out that our hero is on to him he hires a powerful magician to kill him before our hero can blow the whistle on his adulterous ways.
Filled with humor and great kung fu Encounter of the Spooky Kind is a welcome addition to the genre. This is one of the first Hong Kong vampire films and the more well known Mr. Vampire series takes its cues from Spooky as it was made a full 5 years before the iconic Mr. Vampire. If you’ve seen other sorcerer hopping vampire films this film doesn’t upset the apple cart. It’s by the books, or I should say it’s the foundation layer for all similar films to come. Fun and well done.
